Oh, how I wish someone at Autodesk would hear our plea. I too am really disgusted about the performance of Map 3D2006 but cannot get anyone to at least acknowledge there is a problem. Here are a couple of fixes I have had to implement: 1. Turn off Communication Center
->The first requires editing the registry. If you are not comfortable doing that, ask your administrator.
In key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R16.1\ACAD-301:409\CadManagerC ontrol\CommunicationCenter\ Set it to read: 0 EnableCommunicationCenter to 0 2. Move Plot Style Tables to another directory so the plot dialog box will not hangup
3. Go back to normal map "skin"
->enter mapskinmap in command line
When any drawing is opened in Autocad 2006, type this on the command line: MAPSKINMAP This will get rid of the XP metallic look to the interface which actually slows performance.
4 Turn off background printing
5. Turn off logging, and alert boxes
->in the bottom right corner of Autocad "task bar" is a down arrow. It allows you to turn off whatever you don't always use. You can also turn off notifications etc.
6 Go back to normal text dialog box editing
-> set the system variable dtexted to 1. That lets you edit in a dialog box and a value of zero lets you edit in place 7. Turn off all but what I need in the Autocad "task bar"
8 To increase speed of image display -
-> Type MAPIOPTIONS on the command line. Change the memory limit used for images to 384.
Basically try to reset everything to the "old" style Map and it will speed things up dramatically. When/if Autodesk fixes it, we can go back to the bell and whistles this release has offered but failed to execute.
Autodesk Map 3D 2006 Performance
1. Right click on any DWG file. Select Enable/Disable Signature Icons from the shortcut menu. Uncheck the box that says Validate digitial signatures..... 2. Right click on windows desktop and select "Properties" "Settings" "Advanced" "Troubleshooting". Change the slider for hardware acceleration down to None.
3 By the way, I read another post about a possible flaw and several of the guys suggested that it was a Microsoft bug and not Autocad. Short story, after you open Autocad the first time, minimize it and then restore it. When you minimize it, it will release ram and come back with greatly reduced memory usage. Don't understand it but it seems to help. You can open Task Manager before launching Autocad (or any other program for that matter) and check the memory usage. Autocad usually starts at over 350 megs. After minimizing and restoring, it comes back at somewhere 15 or 20 megs......big difference. As you are working in Autocad, it might help to periodically minimize and then restore.
4 Idem pour la fenêtre Visual Lisp: Il ne faut pas l'ajuster plein écran sous peine de 40% de CPU en plus.
5 Windows XP Pro-Under Control Panel/System Properties/Performance Settings/Visual Effects Tab/ check: "Adjust for best performance"
Autodesk Map 3D 2006 Performance
2. The Plot, Page Setup, and Options dialog boxes will always be slower to display the first time they are invoked (opened) than in subsequent displays.
The reason performance is slow when invoking these dialog boxes for the first time is because the following events take place:
1). Connections to network directory paths and network hard-copy devices are established.
2). All configured HDI and system devices configured in Windows are read.
3). All plot style tables from local hard drives or network drives are retrieved.
4). Any saved page setup configurations are saved.
If you find that these dialog boxes are slow to display every time you invoke them, try these troubleshooting suggestions:
1). Remove any unnecessary HDI devices and system printers.
2). Remove or archive any unnecessary plot style tables.
3). Remove any unnecessary network paths from the search directories in the Options dialog box, such as support files, device drivers, and project files.
Log in as the System Administrator and do the same function to test for permission issues.
